Local elections matter. Our leaders in Washington, D.C., originate in our individual states, in our local counties.
Early voting begins today. The March 4, 2014 Texas Primary Election date is quickly approaching. Candidates are attending forums, campaign workers are working late hours trying to ensure their candidate’s message is received by as many voters as is possible, and all the while the general public goes about their daily business mostly unaware of the upcoming election. And dare I say, while not caring about the upcoming election.
We live in the United States of America where many wars have shed the blood of our loved ones and America’s monetary resources. These wars were fought for our freedom as well as for the freedom of people living in other countries. But, “We the People” of America ignore the privilege of voting because we are either too busy, think it doesn’t matter how we vote, or simply just do not care. Our apathy is contributing to the erosion of our liberties and freedoms.
As a Christian, I believe it is our duty, obligation if you will, to vote. Not to do so, I believe, is a sin. Our political leaders, it seems, have forgotten that America was founded on the common acceptance of what is known as the Judeo-Christian Ethic, which is the system of the moral and social values that originates in the Old and New Testaments in the Bible.
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”
The Texas Pledge: “Honor the Texas Flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.”
When I see “Old Glory” or hear the Star Spangled Banner played or sung, I get an overwhelming sense of pride. Our Flag is still standing high and proud. What does that mean to you, a voting citizen of the State of Texas?
I am asking you to please vote in this election. Your vote matters.
